My mom recently underwent a total knee replacement surgery on her right knee. After her surgery, my two brothers and I, as well as my older daughters, took turns staying with her. We made sure she was comfortable and cared for to encourage a speedy recovery. I'm happy to report that she is doing great and, like all of the kind emails sent to me by readers mentioned, she is recovering quickly!
Eating a diet rich in fiber while drinking plenty of liquids is a wonderful way to support the body after any kind of surgery. I know it may sound funny, but being able to use the bathroom regularly is a simple, daily habit we can take for granted. Add to the discomfort from surgery not being able to go and your concerns double! Unfortunately, I relate to this all too well as I experienced this issue first hand after my own surgery nearly three years ago. Having plenty of fiber post-surgery can be a proactive way to avoid creating an additional issue during recovery.
To support a loved one recovering from surgery, here are thoughtful ways to increase fiber intake:
  • Drink plenty of liquids! Avoid carbonated beverages and look for electrolyte drinks that do not add sugar. Fresh coconut water is one of my personal favorites. Smoothies are also a great way to get liquids as well as fiber!
  • Eat foods rich in probiotics like yogurt, kefir or sauerkraut.
  • Eat plenty of insoluble fiber! Broccoli is a wonderful source of insoluble fiber, a type of fiber that isn't digestible and helps to "scrub" our digestive system.
  • Have a serving of fibrous fruit with each meal: grapes, kiwis, blackberries, raspberries, grapes, apples, prunes and pears are all great options!
  • Drink 4-8 oz of slightly warmed prune juice. This is an old stand by, but is very effective!
  • Don't stress - after a surgery, your body is recovering from a major trauma and may need to recoup before starting good digestion again.
  • Take the recommended pharmaceutical or over-the-counter medications your doctor may have prescribed to help with this issue.

The next time you are taking a meal to someone recovering from surgery, consider a meal rich in fiber. While convincing our bodies that recovery is happening, digestion may take a back seat. By providing fibrous food options as well as encouraging hydration, you are helping your loved one to have what is needed to walk the road of recovery.
Do you have any go-to fiber rich meals you love? We love supporting you as you reach out in your communities. Providing fiber rich food ideas would be a great topic to discuss. Do you agree? 😉
