My mom recently underwent a total knee replacement surgery on her right knee. After her surgery, my two brothers and I, as well as my older daughters, took turns staying with her. We made sure she was comfortable and cared for to encourage a speedy recovery. I'm happy to report that she is doing great and, like all of the kind emails sent to me by readers mentioned, she is recovering quickly!
Eating a diet rich in fiber while drinking plenty of liquids is a wonderful way to support the body after any kind of surgery. I know it may sound funny, but being able to use the bathroom regularly is a simple, daily habit we can take for granted. Add to the discomfort from surgery not being able to go and your concerns double! Unfortunately, I relate to this all too well as I experienced this issue first hand after my own surgery nearly three years ago. Having plenty of fiber post-surgery can be a proactive way to avoid creating an additional issue during recovery.
To support a loved one recovering from surgery, here are thoughtful ways to increase fiber intake:
Looking for recipes that are high in fiber? We share many good ones on our site!
White Bean Soup with Kale- I love the combination of the white beans and kale. This is a comforting meal!
Lentil and Chickpea Curry with Coconut Milk- This is a delicious vegetarian meal with lots of fiber!
Roasted Brussel Sprouts - You may not serve them as a meal by themselves, but these roasted brussel sprouts are a delicious side to take if you're looking to add fiber in!
Garden Vegetable Calzones - These are completely customizable! You can add as many vegetables as desired.
The next time you are taking a meal to someone recovering from surgery, consider a meal rich in fiber. While convincing our bodies that recovery is happening, digestion may take a back seat. By providing fibrous food options as well as encouraging hydration, you are helping your loved one to have what is needed to walk the road of recovery.
Do you have any go-to fiber rich meals you love? We love supporting you as you reach out in your communities. Providing fiber rich food ideas would be a great topic to discuss. Do you agree? 😉
