Cheer Up a Friend - Take a Wellness Basket
This past year, our family struggled through various illnesses. Thankfully, I was able to avoid getting sick which allowed me to care for my children as needed. This past Christmas, however, I finally came down with the virus that was circulating in our community. I was amazed how a simple little bug zapped all my strength and energy. During this time my family brought me soup and immune-supporting vitamins. Their thoughtful care inspired me with the idea of creating a wellness basket, filled with items to encourage a sick friend. I was able to find all of these items at my local grocery store, making my basket easy to put together! A wellness basket like this is a wonderful way to cheer up a friend and I hope my ideas inspire you to make your own!
Items in my basket include:
Honey: A spoonful of honey is a wonderful way to help soothe an irritated throat or cough. I also enjoy adding it to teas.
Tea: Consider gifting a warming spice tea, like this Pukka Three Ginger tea, to soothe any chills or aches and provide relief from an upset stomach.
Electrolytes: Even when we feel our best, most of us aren't hydrating well enough. I like to include an electrolyte drink of some sort to encourage drinking! Getting enough fluids is even more important when feeling under the weather.
Lip balm: I always appreciate lip balm, especially at night before bed when I'm dealing with congestion and can't breathe through my nose! It helps keep my lips from getting dry and cracked. This thoughtful gift would be a wonderful addition to a wellness basket!!
Tissues: I always forget to buy tissues and end up using toilet paper, or worse, paper towels! It's incredible the difference using real tissues. Adding a box with a cute pattern would be a special touch to your wellness basket.

Homemade or Store-Bought Soup: If taking a meal, consider a single serving of soup to add to your wellness basket. You can use canned soup or one that you prepare. I have found the following recipe to be just what the doctor ordered!
To make my homemade Chicken Soup you'll need:
  • 1 whole chicken (I prefer to use organic)
  • 5-7 carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 large onion, cubed
  • 1 celery heart, chopped
  • 1 bunch of fresh parsley, to taste (use half the bunch)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
Directions:
  • In a large stock pot, fill with enough water to completely cover the chicken.
  • Bring to a boil, then gently boil for 45-50 minutes, or until the meat falls off the bone.
  • Carefully remove the chicken and place it on a cutting board, allowing it to cool before picking the meat.
  • While the chicken cools, add your chopped carrots, celery, onions, and parsley to the same water you boiled the chicken in. Gently boil for approximately 20 more minutes, until the carrots are tender.
  • When the meat has cooled, pick the chicken and add it back to the pot, discarding the skin and bones. (You can save the skin and bones to make a simple bone broth, like the recipe I share here. Cut the meat into bite-sized pieces or leave it in large chunks.
  • Salt and pepper to taste!
**You can cook noodles if desired. The key is to cook them till al-dente, rinse them under cold water, and add them to the soup once cooled to keep them from getting mushy.
To add an extra thoughtful touch, I recommend these microwavable, phthalate, and BPA-free travel containers. They have lids that both lock to prevent spilling and vent, to help release steam when re-heating!
