Caring for Those Who Are Alone This Season
For some, the beginning of the holiday season brings much joy and anticipation. We lovingly prepare baked goods and open our homes to share in the memories together. While my house is full of young children, others may be experiencing an empty nest. Maybe you know someone who has lost their spouse or is recently divorced and navigating through the holidays alone for the first time. If you are alone this season, we are thinking of you! If you know someone who is lonely, we are sharing thoughtful ways you can bless them during this season.
Knock and say hello.
One of the simplest ways to reach out to someone who is alone is to find a time to check in on them. This simple gesture can bless them immensely. My mom shared with me how much she appreciates a neighbor who regularly checks in on her to see how she is doing. Recently, she shared a plate of molasses cookies that my mom loved! Sharing food and a smile is always a wonderful way to brighten anyone's day.
Invite a single loved one to join you.
For some, the hardest thing about being alone during the holidays is having time on your hands while family is busy. As a mom, I know how busy life can get trying to juggle play practices, school celebrations, and birthday parties all while maintaining our school schedule. There can be an abundance of activities to participate in that easily keeps me occupied. Take some time to include a loved one to join you who may be alone. While it may be something uneventful for you, they may love partaking in the business of your life.
Don't ask how you can help, just step in and with a thoughtful gesture.
I've definitely been the one to listen to a friend in need and then follow the conversation with "if you need anything let me know" or "how can I help?" While these are kind statements, it may be difficult for the other person to vocalize what they actually need, especially if they are coping with grief in any way. Reach out with a plate of cookies or write them a card saying you are thinking of them. While asking how you can help is always appreciated, being specific also shows that you mean to follow up with your offer.
Do you know someone who is alone this season and could use a little comfort and cheer? Here is a simple recipe for molasses cookies, like the ones my mom's neighbor brought her. The molasses, cinnamon, cloves and ginger are a seasonal delight!
